Black cats have a reputation as a bad omen in Western history, causing bad luck to anyone who lets them cross their path. They were often considered to be the familiars of Witches. This led to the cats, and the people seen with them, being killed. While their extermination may have had a greater negative impact--that of widespread plague from rat overpopulation. Black cats are still the least likely to be adopted due to to their negative association. However, there are other parts of the world where black cats are seen as good omens, such as Japan.
